Brothers Beer x
Owairaka District School
School holidays tend to be a fairly quiet time for the Almighty Garden Squad. No school means no garden or kitchen classes, and no need for volunteers. These past holidays were different though. Our friends at Owairaka District School in Auckland have a particularly action-packed garden with multiple vege patches, chickens, a wood-fire oven, pohutukawa forest, 13 compost bins, worm farms and upcoming developments to manage. Owairaka’s Garden to Table greenthumb gurus, Virginia and Sarah, asked if Almighty could possibly round up some muscles to help sort the Pohutukawa forest and organise some firewood and kindling, in preparation for term 4.
We knew our mighty brewing pals, Brothers Beer, would be up for a mission so one stormy day we headed to the Owairaka School Pohutukawa forest for a working bee extravaganza.
Tornado threats, cracks of thunder, lightning bolts and the odd downpour were not to stop us. As we cleared, collected and sorted wood surrounding the epic old Pohutukawa, we felt like we were in Avatar! In-house nature experts, Virginia and Sarah, taught us all about aerial roots (natural nets that Pohutukawa and other trees grow to protect and secure their larger branches) and other fascinating forest facts.
Thanks Nick, Matt and Matt from Brothers Beer and Owairaka School for a wicked day in the woods!
